Fruits and vegetable production down
OTTAWA — Canadian fruit and vegetable growers planted fewer acres of crops this year.
Across Canada, growers planted 528,000 acres, down three per cent from last year, says Statistics Canada.
About 84 per cent of all Canadian vegetables and fruits are grown in Quebec and Ontario.
About two-thirds of the fruit grown will be processed with apples, blueberries and grapes, representing 83 per cent of the total fruit crop.
Here’s what else is up and down. This year saw a decline in planted acres for apples, peaches and pears, specifically in Ontario.
Vegetable producers have increased the area of lettuce, broccoli, cucumbers, gherkins, leeks and shallots, but planted fewer green peas, tomatoes, dry onions and carrots.
