Five convicted of illegal hunting

Two go to jail

PEMBROKE — Five hunters fined for illegal hunting, included a man and a woman sentenced to jail time for shooting a moose in Algonquin Park.

On September 29, 2007, conservation officers spotted Quebec residents Emily Rose Meness and Norman Chabot loading an adult bull moose into the back of a pickup truck.

The two fled the scene, leading officers in a chase through the park. Officers stopped the truck and arrested Chabot. Meness then took the wheel and sped off. OPP were called in and stopped the runaway hunter with a spike belt they placed on a roadway.

Chabot was sentenced to 90 days in jail, while Meness was sentenced to 30 days. Both were convicted for unlawfully hunting wildlife in a provincial park, possessing illegally killed wildlife and failing to stop for a conservation officer. They were fined $8,000.

In another hunting incident, three Timmons-area men were fined a total of $3,900 for hunting deer illegally in Lanark County.

A conservation officer found a deer carcass in the back of a pickup truck as he carried out a routine check for hunting licenses. The deer did not have the required game seal. The men later admitted to trespassing on private property and shooting from the roadway.

In court July 14, John West and Ronald Short were both fined $1,650 for possessing illegally killed wildlife and for making an inaccurate statement to a conservation officer. Gilles Veilleux got a $600 fine for possessing illegally killed wildlife, and transporting a deer without a proper hunting seal. West had his hunting license suspended for one year.
