McMillan brothers dominate 4-H show

LINDSAY — The McMillan brothers turned in stellar performances at the 4-H Showmanship and Conformation competition at the Ontario Summer Show at the Lindsay Exhibition Grounds.

Twenty-year-old Morgon McMillan won the showmanship, beating out 83 other competitors. His brother, 17-year-old Ethan, won the conformation class while the third place finisher, Kristen Barnum, showed a Kingsway calf bred by the McMillan family at Hastings, in Northumberland County.

Kingsway Farms owner Gord McMillan, playing down the victory, said it all boiled down to a day when things went right for the boys. Their sister Emma, 19, finished in third spot but is probably the best showman in the family.

But take nothing away from Morgon, a fitter with an international reputation. Two days after the Summer Show he was working a show in Wisconsin.

"He goes all over the world, but I wanted to make sure he got an education," the father said. Morgon is currently in the Ag Science program at the University of Guelph.

Ethan, who hopes to farm some day, will be attending Kemptville College in the fall.

For two years, the Northumberland team with a core of McMillans and the backing of Kingsway Farms has garnered the highest points of any county at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.

Prominent in the performance was Kristen Barnum, Honourable Mention in the 4-H Conformation competition at the Summer Show.

Owner of Kingsway Farms, Gord McMillan, says a lot of preparation goes into those wins. "They (showmen) feed right, they train right," he says.
