Real ice cream crusade sells
3,000 litres CORNWALL — Norma Winters is sleep-deprived. She took orders for 3,000 litres of ice cream from more than 100 customers. That's $10,000 of product. Winters, who is a dairy farmer, was upset that most ice cream being sold in stores isn't 100 per cent real cream. They include a cheaper butter oil/sugar blend. So, she hooked up with Kawartha Dairy at Bobcaygen to get 100 per cent dairy ingredients from Ontario cows. And she found it was cheaper than the big name brands. She took her first order from 55 customers in September at the Newington Fair. People wanted more. The third order arrived at six locations in eastern Ontario Nov. 24. "If I ran my own business, I'd be thinking "I should be selling it,"" she said, noting that some farmers have approached their local grocery stores to encourage them to stock ice cream with real cream from local cows. As for Winters, she won't be taking more orders because she has her own family farm to run. "I'm exhausted," she said. "Donald Macrimmon, from Glengarry, also took a lot of orders, totaling over $2,000. He is the guy that deserves the thanks because he talked me into doing another order."
