LINDSAY — Ontario Agriculture
Minister Steve Peters fears a revolution from the back roads.
Peters is concerned about the Lanark
Landowners’ Association and a renewed revolt among farmers from Vankleek
Hill to Windsor.
The evening following the LLA
Prescott tractor demonstration Feb. 4, Peters was on the phone to
grassroots leader Joe Hickson, of Lindsay.
"There’s momentum in the
backroads." Hickson said and the minister knows it. "We’re
ready to act. He knows he’s got a revolt down the pipe. It’s no idle
threat."
Talk shifted to the Lanark
Landowners. What do you think of them? Peters asked.
Hickson said their message isn’t
clear but supports their methods. "Hats off to them. I applaud them.
March on. As far as closing down Hwy 401 for three hours – big deal.
Mother nature closes it down for eight. They’ve started a momentum that
we’ve been trying for 30 years."
But would farmers march on Queen’s
Park? Peters asked.
"Damn right we would,"
Hickson said he replied, adding that he doesn’t have to put his church
hat on to talk to Peters.
But isn’t the LLA too radical?
Peters asked.
"They’re radical compared to
what we’re accustomed to but they’re no more radical than the nurses,
school teachers and auto workers."
In an interview with Farmers
Forum, Hickson said he doesn’t mind farmers riding on LLA coat tails
or the two groups standing shoulder-to-shoulder. Would Ontario’s farmers
would plan demonstrations with the Lanark Landowners? Said Hickson:
"I think that is a real possibility."
