10 per cent of corn still in field as of mid-January
GUELPH — The amount of corn and soybeans still in the field in early January is up over last year, says a grain production insurance analyst.
About 10 per cent of corn and 2 per cent of soybean acreage was still in the field as of Jan. 9, said Lindsay Barfoot, account lead for grain production insurance for Agricorp.
Agricorp had insured 9,112 corn producers for 1.4 million acres, or about 70 to 80 per cent of province-wide production. By Jan. 9, 7,280 producers had completed harvest, leaving about 10 per cent of the crop still in the field, Barfoot said.
Meantime, yields looked good at about 169 bushels per acre on average, a 23 per cent increase over average yields province wide.
As of Jan. 9, the province’s 11,616 soybean producers had harvested 1.64 million acres or 98 per cent of total acreage planted. Yields were about 18 per cent above the provincial average, Barfoot said.
Between 70 and 80 per cent of corn and soybean acres planted are insured each year.
