How Don Cherry saved this granddad's life
Barn roof collapsed but granddad was glued to TV
And you can bet Don Cherry took credit for it.
One of the highlights of the weekly Hockey Night in Canada sportscast is Coach’s Corner, hosted by the colourful Don Cherry. Cherry certainly believes Coach’s Corner is must-see TV. But even he was shocked when junior hockey star Matt Duchene told him it was life-saving TV, reported NHL.com.
When Duchene, who was picked third overall in this year’s NHL hockey draft by Colorado Avalanche, appeared on Coach’s Corner, he made sure he thanked Cherry for saving his grandfather’s life.
"My grandpa has a farm in Cornwall," Duchene told Cherry. When the ice storm hit in 1998, his grandfather’s farm had no electricity. But he had a generator so he could milk cows and watch Coach’s Corner. "My grandma said, ‘Hey, Newell, go out and feed the heifers in the barn,’ and he said, ‘I want to watch Coach’s Corner first.’
"He watched it and as it was ending he heard a big crash, and he looked outside and the barn roof had collapsed where he would have been standing. Killed a whole bunch of cows, so he probably would have died in that."
Cherry was more than flattered when Duchene told the story, until Duchene quipped, "I knew Coach’s Corner was good for something."
