Coyotes kill large numbers of cattle

Though sheep are the main victims of marauding coyotes and wolves, cattle losses are also high and increasing at least over the short run. In a one year period in 2006-2007, 957 cattle were killed in Ontario due to predators. The next year 1136 were killed.

Frontenac County lost 44 cattle in 2006-2007 and 55 a year later. Hastings lost 46 in 2006-2007 and 71 the following year. Only two counties or regions showed a decline in predator kills. Kawartha lakes dropped from 111 to 91, while Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Counties went from 25 to 20.

Coyotes like horse meat, though not as well as lamb or beef. Ottawa lost two horses to coyotes in 2007-2008. Lanark lost one.
