No hay shortage
How about that hay? Talk of a shortage has turned into talk of a barn buster.
Last month, farmers across Eastern Ontario said the crop didn’t look so good. Then the weather turned.
"There’s only half the concern there was one month ago," said OMAFRA crop specialist Gilles Quesnel, based in Kemptville. "Just about everyone told me they had harvested a lot more hay on first cut than they anticipated. It’s a real turnaround. A lot of farmers are looking for storage."
Even the second cut is coming along nicely, he said, adding there are pockets of concern along the St. Lawrence River at the south end of Dundas, Stormont and Glengarry Counties. Lindsay area also had a low yield due to winterkill and a dry April and May.
