The Enright Brothers Win at Strawfest

By: Cathy McNally

CARP — Renfrew’s Enright family conquered this year’s Strawfest on June 25 as three brothers won top honours in five categories.

Ryan Enright was grand champion and senior champion showman and had the top Limousin. Younger brother Sean, 16, was market class champion and champion intermediate showman. Sean’s twin brother, Robert, placed second in intermediate showmanship. There were 92 exhibitors vying for a total of $10,000 in prize money.

Sean said he and his family have a 300-head beef limousin farm and he enjoys farming with his family. "It’s fun and relaxing not being around busy areas," he said. "I love working with my family and it’s good to be together."

In what she calls the best cattle show in the province, Amber McLachlan walked away with the grand champion heifer award.

Travelling from Alvinston, in Lambton County, it took Amber’s father eight hours of driving to get Amber and her crossbred heifer, Roxy, to the show. Amber had been looking forward to the event all year.

"This is our favourite competition. The judges are fair and the competition is great," she said.

The 14-year-old has been competing for over six years and says she won’t stop now.

"I’m very serious about competing," she said while petting Roxy on the head. "I’ll do it my whole life. Eventually I want to get into judging."

Amber acknowledged patience as her key strength to winning the award.

"Roxy was hard when we first got her," Amber said about the 14-month-old heifer. "But I worked really hard with her. Also, with her quality and colour she really sticks out."
