
Russell is again top milk producing county in Ontario
Five of Ontario's top herds are east of Toronto
Russell is once again the top milk producing county in the province, while five of the top 10 producing Ontario Holstein herds are on farms east of Toronto. They are:
• 3rd place 69-head milking herd owned by Leo (the Great) Bauman, of Lyn, near Brockville, with an average production per cow of 12,963 kilograms per year;
• 4th place herd owned by Claude and Celine Seguin of St. Isidore;
• 5th place herd owned by Barry Gould, of Foresters Falls;
• 7th place herd owned by Fred and Theo Vanmunsteren, of Sarsfield, east of Ottawa;
• 9th place herd owned by Sylvain Levac, of St. Bernardin, east of Ottawa.
The 92 dairy farms in Russell County scored highest for milk value, fourth highest for management scores and on average produced more milk per cow – 9,977 kilograms. The average composite BCA was 224, the highest in the province. The records are published annually by Dairy Herd Improvement, the provincial manager of herd records.
The top two producing Ayrshire herds are both in eastern Ontario. The highest producing herd is owned by Remi Leroux, of Prescott County, followed by the herd owned by Ken and Shirley Rose, of Mountain, south of Winchester.
The highest producing Jersey herd is owned by Shawn Mosier, of Battersea, in Frontenac County. Meantime, the highest producing Brown Swiss herd in the province is owned by Walter Von Ah, of St. Albert, east of Ottawa in Russell County.
