Canada loves the protesting farmer

By Patrick Meagher

You’ve gotta love those 150 farmers for sticking to their guns and slowing traffic at three Ottawa food distribution terminals. Ramping up the pressure is one of the few avenues left to press governments for a better solution to a farm crisis.

The detractors fear that farmers will lose their good reputation by disrupting business and blocking city traffic. But ask any protesting farmer how he was treated on the stump and you’ll hear of heart-warming stories of support, including strangers serving coffee and sandwiches.

Not surprising, a recent Leger Marketing survey says more Canadians trust farmers than doctors and police officers. Of 22 professions rated, Canadians only trust firefighters and nurses more than farmers, the survey of 1,500 Canadians concludes.

Leger vice-president Marc Tremblay said people trust farmers because they are perceived to work hard, grow important crops and don’t earn a lot of money. The survey based its results on a repeated simple question for each profession: "Do you trust or distrust farmers?"

According to the survey, here’s who we trust:

1. Firefighters: 96% (trust level)

2. Nurses: 95 %

3. Farmers: 92 %

4. Doctors 89%

5. Teachers 88%

6. Engineers 88%

7. Police officers 81%

8. Judges 78%

9. Notaries 75%

10. Bankers 72%

11. Church representatives 64%

12. Pollsters 62%

13. Economists 62%

14. Senior public servants 50%

15. Journalists 49%

16. Lawyers 48%

17. Insurance brokers 46 %

18. Real estate agents 42%

19. publicists 40%

20. Unionists 38%

21. Car salespeople 19%

22. Politicians 14%

Farmers need not worry about their good name. They can take pride in their reputation but more so in the abundance of heart in farm country.
