James sisters win 4-H dairy
showmanship METCALFE — When Holstein breeder Louis Patenaude met Jack James at the Metcalfe fairgrounds, he said "This has been a good day for you." "It is," said James. "I’ve never felt prouder." James’s daughters Shanna and Jenna both set an unprecedented record at the 4-H Regionals in Metcalfe, finishing first and second respectively in the dairy showmanship competition. In addition, Shanna James won the Market Lamb competition. The lamb sold for $12.75 per lb. ($1,492). Shanna, a third-year student in agriculture at the University of Guelph, shrugged off the wins, as all in a day’s work. But in nine years of competing in 4-H this was her best year. "Just practice and enjoy what you’re doing," she says. Reserve champion in dairy showmanship, Jenna James, is in Grade 11 at Osgoode High School . She wants to pursue a career in agriculture or become a teacher. She advises 4-H members to work hard, have fun. |
