Dedicated to saving you money
OTTAWA — Wayne Davis is on a mission.
As sales representative for Farmers of North America he says his western-based non-profit group can get you a better deal on a lot of things. He’ll sign you up for $250 a year and if he doesn’t save you that amount of money in one year, you get your money back.
The about 15-year-old Saskatchewan group with 7,500 members buys in bulk to get their membership a better price. From lubricants, to fertilizer and tires, they have a plethora of products. And now they are moving east into Ontario. Since January they have signed up 600 new farmer members. "It’s spread like wild fire," Davis said. "The main thing is that this is a cause."
In his sales pitch, he argues that are two myths about agriculture. First, that agriculture is not profitable and second, that the industry is not organized. He says the industry is profitable and organized but not in favour of farmers. His group’s task is to level the playing field by bulk buying to secure special rates from some of the biggest suppliers of agricultural products and services.
A former dairy farmer from Sherbrooke, Quebec, Davis says Farmers of North America succeeds by steering clear of politics. "We have people on the left. We have people on the right. We don’t want to get involved in politics. We have one focus: to improve farm profitability."
