81-year-old farmer dies in field

BELLEVILLE — An 81-year-old Prince Edward County farmer was killed while working in a field a few hundred metres from his home on the morning of Thursday, August 2.

A police report said Ralph Ackerman, of Ameliasburgh, "became lodged under the farm tractor and trailer equipment that he was operating in his field," just east of Rossmore and south of Belleville.

Provincial police, paramedics and firefighters were dispatched shortly after 11 a.m. to the farmstead. The tractor did not roll over, police said. There are about 20 farm fatalities each year in Ontario. Tractor roll-overs are the most common causes of farm fatalities and men over 65 are at highest risk of being killed on the job while farming.
