The OFA's new president, Spencerville farmer Geri Kamenz, stands in front of his farm after the election. "We won't be navel gazing," he said, of the OFA. "Our focus is clearly on the issues."

He has been working towards this goal for 10 years. On November 20, Spencerville hog, beef and crop farmer, Geri Kamenz, 46, was elected president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, the first president east of Toronto since Wolfe Island's Bridget Pike in the late 1980s.

    One group of eastern Ontario dairy farmers has hired a posse of lawyers, while another is working a petition through the province. Both groups have the same aim: to revoke the new quota changes made by its marketing board, the Dairy Farmers of Ontario.

    A study of the economic impact of agriculture in Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough has recommended that agricultural land remain in agriculture and poor land in proximity with prime land be designated as agricultural.

  • Banned feed fed to cows in Leeds                                                        BROCKVILLE —  Some farmers have unwittingly served their animals banned feed. Bone meal and blood meal were accidentally mixed for bovine feed by Agribands  Canada Inc. and distributed from an Addison feed store in Leeds County. 

  • Kamenz to push for unified voice                                                            Spencerville farmer Geri Kamenz is the new president for the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. With 36,880 members, membership has increased for the province's largest farm lobby group and the mood is optimistic. Farmers Forum visited Kamenz at Buckstop Farms to discuss the issues.  

  • Farmers must plan now for income security, says new   VP                                                                                                                                           TRENTON- Rising prices have boosted the crop industry and the harvest has been higher than the 10-year average, but this is no time to sit back and rest on our laurels. The newly elected vice president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA), Bette Jean Crewes, says the time is right to put a plan in place to provide price stability for agriculture.                                                                                           

  • New OFA executive dominated by eastern Ontario farmers                                                                                                             TORONTO- Four of the seven members of the new Ontario Federation of Agriculture executive are from eastern Ontario.            

  • Local cow sells for $510,000                                                                         TORONTO- Ontario's highest selling Holstein of the year, Penlow Georgette Outside, went on display at the Royal for a week in November. She was sold for $510,000 at a sale in Port Hope in July to an Italian who lives in Brazil, Giovani Lucignano.                

  • Prize calf mistakenly sold- traced to slaughterhouse                                                                                                   COBDEN —  A bull calf valued at more than $5,000 and destined for an artificial insemination unit was mistakenly hauled off to a Montreal slaughterhouse after a drover pulled in the wrong yard.
