Tractor tire crushes farmer

CURRAN — A 39-year-old farm worker was crushed to death by a large tractor wheel after he stopped the tractor to dislodge a bird’s nest from the engine.

Witnesses say Steve Jubainville got off a tractor at a side road near Curran, east of Ottawa, to dislodge the nest. While climbing back onto the tractor he fell off. A back tire rolled over him, said Suzelle Delorme, wife of Daniel Delorme who runs a large Prescott County potato farm, where Jubainville worked for 10 years.

"It was a moment of error," she said. After crushing Jubainville the tractor continued down the road for another 200 to 300 feet before it turned over in a ditch, she said.

The accident occurred at Concession Road 8 at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14.

A neighbour said Jubainville is from "a beautiful family." His parents, Jean-Marc and Therese Jubainville, are retired farmers in the area.
