TORONTO — A 13-year-old Carp girl won the junior
showmanship championship at the Hays Classic and then went on to place
third in the finals.
A grade 8 pupil, Jaclyn Rivington, had placed second at
the the eastern regional 4-H competition at Metcalfe.
Making the top placing all depends on the calf, she
says. "The calf gets scared quickly, and I had to bring her head out
and walk her."
Were you scared? "Yes, I was,"she responded
forthrightly. But as the competition progressed, she became more
confident. This is the first time she has done so well, though she has
been showing three years in 4-H.
She lives on a dairy farm at Carp, where her family
milks about 50 registered Holsteins, altogether managing about 130 head of
cattle. She is a seventh generation farmer.
The grand champion was Logan Chalack, of Alberta; and
the reserve, Kathy Wilson, of Wellington County.
Durham County turned in stellar performances. Durham West had the best
exhibit and was named premier county.
