KEMPTVILLE — The province will be hiring nutrient
management specialists and engineers to handle problems farmers have in
implementing the much feared manure law Bill 81.
Earl Pollock, a regional manager at the Kemptville
Ministry of Agriculture office, will be in charge of the new team and says
the specialists will be hired to visit individual farms and provide
education and training. They will also help resolve problems when a farm
has difficulty complying with Bill 81, he said. The engineers will be
hired to provide assistance to consultants and farmers on issues such as
plans for a new manure pit.
Pollock, who was named nutrient management field
manager for eastern and Northern Ontario, said it is too early to tell how
many new specialists and engineers will be hired but that the positions
will be full-time and the team will cover eastern Ontario as far west as
Highway 400, which runs north from Toronto. It is not yet clear if the
specialists and engineers will have the power to charge farmers with
non-compliance of Bill 81, he said.
To fill positions, Pollock will be seeking candidates with an
understanding of nutrient management principles, environmental legislation
and agriculture, along with computer communication skills. Pollock can be
reached in Kemptville at 613-258-8304.
