Kemptville College graduates 134 students

KEMPTVILLE — Kemptville College graduated 134 students May 24, including 43 students in the agriculture diploma course.

Thirteen agriculture students graduated with honours, a Grade of 80 per cent or higher.

Twenty-five students graduated in agriculture last year and 31 graduated in 2000.

Class valedictorian and agriculture honour student, Colin Hagan, from Perth, plans to one day run the family farm.

He told graduates that he cherished their friendship, noting that one month of friendship at school is like six months in the real world. He shared stories from the dorm, recalling saunas in the shower, floor hockey in the halls and "don't think I don't know who pulled the alarm during final exams at three in the morning."

The college also graduated 25 students from the Equine program, as well as diploma students in food and nutrition management, and in horticulture.

Kemptville College is a satellite campus of the University of Guelph.
  


John Bakker

Age:19

Honour student earned four awards: for highest marks in animal health course, highest marks in animal science, ranked highest in soil principles and earned Eastern Breeders' Incorporated Award for high academic standing and showing a strong interest in genetic improvement of livestock.

From: Dairy farm (milking 45) near Picton

Future: Plans to work on the farm with father and uncle. Has a younger brother also interested in farming.


Colin Hagan

School valedictorian and honour student earned award for highest overall achievement in agronomy. Also earned award for exemplary relationship with fellow students.

Age: 22

From: Dairy farm (milking 25 to 35) near Perth

Future: Will work at Willows Feed Store in Delta. Eventually work on the family farm


Jason MacIntosh

Honour student earned award for best demonstrating dedication to his studies. Two straight years he won the First Line Seeds award among University of Guelph students for his soy inventions soy-based udder balm and soy-mixed diesel fuel.

Age: 20

From: Beef farm near Peterborough

Future: Will work at Peterborough Co-op for the summer. Hopes to research his diesel fuel invention.


Amanda Hammond

Honor student received a scholarship to continue studies at the University of Guelph.

Age: 20

From: Dairy farm milking 130 near Carleton Place. Family farm will be the site of the 2003 International Plowing Match.

Future: Will study bachelor of science at Guelph in September. Plans to become a veterinarian of large animals.


Philip Pollock

Earned award for outstanding achievement in crop science.

Age: 20

From: Williamsburg dairy farm (milking 65)

Future: Dairy farming


Cheryl Hazenburg

Honour student earned award for the highest combined marks in two courses: beef production and pork and poultry production; Also earned award for highest marks in business management.

Age: 20

From: A beef farm at Oakwood, west of Lindsay

Future: Has just started milking at a dairy farm.


Angie Willoughby

Honour student

Age: 20

From: Smiths Falls area beef farm

Future: Will work as a research assistant in agronomy at Kemptville College for the summer. After that, "the world is open to me," she said.


Anton Nussbaumer

Honour student earned award for highest mark in business management course and earned award for excellence in field of soil conservation and water management.

Age: 20

From: Dairy farm (milking 65) near Alexandria

Future: To run the family farm
